Field Experience

In MATES, students take "field classes" that require us to out to field (nearby sites and local areas) to collect data, practice equipment, perform enviroment testing, and more. The field classes I have taken: Marine Biology, Research Methods, and GIS. These classes were some of my most favorite!

Marine Biology

First field class I ever took in Freshmen year. We used several instruments to conduct surface water quality testing. We also went seining often and collected local fish species for our class tank. We also learned to identify over a hundred local speicies by both common and scientific name.

Research Methods

I was selected to be a member of this specialized reserach and field class, where we learned more complex equipment to analyze water quality, soil, and biodiversity. We learned how to further our own research skills and presenting/displaying our data.

Write-ups

Research Methods contained scientific field write ups on the data collected, teaching me how to be a better scientific writer. These skills were also used in my independent research.
